WELCOME TO UNIT 3 - Area of Study 1

In this area of study, we will move beyond watching media to analysing and questioning how stories are created and understood. We will look at how media texts are built through codes, conventions and creative choices that shape meaning and draw in audiences. Together, we will discuss how people, ideas and cultures are represented, and consider how these representations reflect or challenge the social, political, historical and institutional contexts in which they are made.

You will also explore how audiences engage with and respond to media narratives, and reflect on whose voices are included, amplified or excluded. By the end of this area of study, you will have developed the skills to break down narratives, evaluate representations and explain how media, context and audience are connected.

Unit 3

Area of Study 2

The focus of this outcome is Media Production Research & Development

For this outcome you will begin planning your own media product. This involves moving through the pre-production stage, developing ideas, and showing how your decisions are influenced by audience, purpose, and context.

Area of Study 1

The focus of this outcome is Narratives in Context

Within this outcome you will study how media stories are created using codes and conventions, and how they reflect or challenge the values of the time and place they were made. You’ll also look at how different audiences engage with and respond to these stories.

Area of Study 3

The focus of this outcome is Pre Production planning

For the final outcome of the unit you will develop and document a media pre- production plan. You will explore important issues and debates about media in society, such as regulation, representation, and the impact of new technologies. You will consider different sides of these debates and explain how media can shape culture, identity and values.

Let’s create the future, one media product at a time.

Within this Area of Study you will use a range of resources to help you learn, create and prepare for assessment. These include past VCE Media exams and examiners’ reports to understand how questions are asked and marked, case studies of films, TV shows and other media texts to see theory in action, and tutorials on production skills such as editing, sound design and lighting. You will also have access to planning templates, storyboards and scripts to guide your own media product, as well as articles, videos and toolkits that explore issues like representation, ethics and media regulation. All resources are chosen to support both your creative work and your understanding of media concepts, making sure you are ready for your SACs, SAT and the final exam.
